Skills in Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord is a character progression system that determines the character's overall effectiveness in and out of battle. Wait for enemy, use cav for engaging enemy cav or hitting archers. Archers and infantry can just chill, infantry maybe charge right as lines meet if you want to be aggressive.
